Email from Steven the evening of the 23rd.
Note MEPS is the Military Entrance Processing Center

"Lou, Jeanni, Frank, Mikey and Jimmy,
We hope that everyone has a wonderful Christmas.
We've had an extremely busy few months pursuing goals and Taylor was proudly sworn-in today into the U.S. Army. Its pretty funny because he was officially declared the last person enlisted into the Army for 2010, , , for the entire United States. He was away at MEPS and the last one to make it through before they shut down for the year.
He starts training now after school and goes to Basic Training in July after graduation from high school, , , and then he will become a Helicopter Mechanic. I'm embarrassed to say how proud I am, , ,
After basic he will go to Fort Eustis (Virginia Beach) for a year of helicopter mechanic training, , ,
Merry Christmas and much love from Sacramento, and attached are a few photos, , , Steve"

20101221

for Wednesday December 22nd

Old man winter has paid a visit to western Virginia. Here is Paddy and Joe out for a sled ride.

Here they are shoveling snow and ice. Thanks Jeanni for the pictures.

And digging out the car. Jeanni has lots of tales to tell about surviving the elements. The SUV is four wheel drive. The weather report right now, their time today 43 degree hi and 27 deg low which can means ice. Humidity is 90% which can mean biting cold.
I remember living in Colorado Springs (1956). The city was unprepared with snow equipment, most of the small town stayed home. The snow was fun. The ice was very difficult. Mary Ella was nurse at a local hospital. Not being able to get to work she and others had to live there during the shut down of the town. I remember visiting another Lt. and his wife. I didn't stay long. Being shut up in tight quarters brought on tension.
