20130625

for June 26th, Wednesday

Yesterday on the senior blog I showed our Snipe sail boat. Here is a picture off google showing one in action. We all sailed it but I think Mark Jean was the best.  I was surprised to learn it only weighted 360lbs. They sell for $1000 to 1200 used. Here is some information on it.
******
 Snipe Class International.

The Snipe is a 15 12 foot, 2 person, one design racing dinghy. Designed by William Crosby in 1931, it has evolved into a modern, tactical racing dinghy with fleets around the world. The Snipe is simple, making it easy to sail and trailer. The boat is recognized by the International Sailing Federation as an International Class and is sailed in 26 different countries. There have been over 30,000 Snipes constructed worldwide.
The global Snipe slogan is "Serious sailing, Serious fun".
As a formative boat, it's a decisive class for the world of sailing. The top two olympic medalists in sailing, with five and four medals respectively, were Snipe sailors, Torben Grael and Paul Bert Elvstrøm.
It can be sailed by all types of persons, no matter their age, their weight, or their sex. Co-ed crews are very popular in Snipe sailing.
Perhaps because of the very limited evolutions of the boat allowed over the years, there is an excellent second-hand market.
Regattas are held in most countries and local, regional, national and international championships offer great opportunities to compete at different levels of skills.

Here in Mary Jean in Action. Sue is on board, also two other people I can't identify.
A great family trivia question, the boat number. I can not recall its name.

Before the Snipe we had a Penguin. I can't find any of our pictures of this boat. I think the name was Fanny Dunker.

Some older pictures of Julia rafting. She is in front on the right.

The white water looks exciting.
*********
20 years ago I was on a raft like this and was sitting  in front. The Shotover River in New Zealand. Before I new what was happening, I was pitched out and the raft went over the top of me. Some of the rafters were scared and didn't want to rescue me. The guide pulled into a bank like this and I was pulled back into the boat and sat on the floor the rest of the ride.
